Currently, Guatemalan Red Cross provides the service of health care, clinical laboratory or diagnostic with images studies with the support of professional staff trained at the headquarter in Guatemala City, as well as external consultation of medical care in Jalapa, Chiquimula, El Estor, Cobán, Mazatenango, Retalhuleu, Coatepeque, Tecún Umán, Tejutla, San Marcos and Quetzaltenango Delegations. Expanding the coverage of care, medical conferences are also held at urban and rural levels, prioritizing vulnerable populations, providing timely diagnosis and treatment, and harmonizing health promotion for disease prevention.
Guatemalan Red Cross promotes a culture of altruistic and voluntary donation through actions focused on the active participation of young people as important agents of change, motivating and implementing strategies to raise awareness, recruitment, retention and loyalty of donors with the aim of increasing the figures of donors committed to donating blood regularly and contributing to the supply of blood in the Guatemalan hospitals.
Donor awareness, recruitment and retention strategies are implemented, providing information on the importance of voluntary and unpaid blood donation, the need for safe blood supply systems and blood products to save lives is made known. Myths are clarified about donating blood. Additionally, healthy lifestyles are promoted in potential donors.
Sessions and voluntary blood donation campaigns, implemented jointly with Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, as well as sports championships, recognition events for prominent donors, among others, are held and coordinated with public and private Institutions, educational centers, universities, the media, among others.
The service of pre-hospital care and transfers in ambulances are offered with trained first responders in 19 Guatemalan Red Cross’ Delegations and improving the life prognosis of the affected population that is served. This is carried out with the aim of saving lives, providing immediate, timely and quality first response attention to emergencies.
